The North-East Commodity Association (NECAS), in Taraba State, has distributed 30 new tractors for this year’s agriculture to the Association’s 16 LG Chairmen.

Chief of Policy Mechanisation, Engr. Sulaiman D. Sulaiman, who disclosed this during distribution exercise in Jalingo, said the tractors would be used for commercial purposes at a subsidizing rate for farmers to ease the misery they face in the state.

He said that more than two thousand people, including women and youth, would benefit from the 30 tractors across the 16 LGAs, consisting of drivers and their maids, supervisors as well as booking agents already employed by the association.

Northeast Commodity Association (NECAS) announcing the provision of 600 tractors for farmers in the association.

Engr. Sulaiman said, “We have employed over two thousand people to work as Tractor Operators, conductors, supervisors and booking agents and we have organized a training for them to know their responsibilities as well as the rules and regulations of the Association, so if you look at the whole thing, so many people will benefit from each tractor apart from farmers that will also get their work done at a subsidize rate unlike before,”.

He clarified that at the amount of N20,000, one hectare will be done for the farmer, while harvesting would be at the expense of N15,000 after supplying the farmer with seeding, fertilizer, and other inputs.

According to him, people with disabilities have also been given priority to enable them to benefit from the scheme, considering the fact that we are in an era of mechanizing farming where you pay for everything and get your work done.

He added that of the 25,000 farmers screened and cleared by Taraba State’s Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN), about 6,000 are women and promised to provide services to farmers in order to increase their productivity.

While urging recipients of such loans to always pay back in time to allow other recipients to benefit, Engr. Sulaiman also cautioned the Tractor Operators against dishonesty, noting that the tractors were tracked because trackers were mounted in them and anybody found to be playing with them would be considered a thief.

He appealed to the citizens of the state of Taraba to set aside faith, ethnicity, and tribalism and join hands together to live in peace with each other, promising that the Northeast Commodity Association (NECAS) will do everything possible to promote mechanizing farming in the state by providing all the structures and other things required for formers.

Speaking in an interview, the Association’s Technical Officer, Malam Isa Muhammad Yayi, who spoke on behalf of the Tractors Operators vowed to conduct their assigned responsibilities professionally and honestly.

However, they promised to make good use of the gesture by smoothly carrying out their duties in accordance with the Association ‘s guidelines and called on young people, including women, to be key in agriculture and to refrain from seeking a white-collar job, and also appreciates  President Muhammadu Buhari’s emphasis on agriculture, saying that it has helped Nigeria to experience food shortages.
