National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has promised Nigerians a stronger and more proactive approach to fighting terrorism, violent extremism, and organised crime this year.
Speaking through the Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Maj. Gen. Adamu Laka, Ribadu unveiled plans for enhanced collaboration and innovative strategies to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges. He highlighted the operationalisation of the Multi-Agency Anti-Kidnap Fusion Cell as a major step forward in addressing kidnapping and related crimes.
“Looking to 2025, Ribadu reassures Nigerians of the renewed focus on combating terrorism, violent extremism, and other serious organised crimes through enhanced collaboration, innovative strategies, and proactive measures,” Maj. Gen. Laka’s statement read.
“He highlights recent advancements, including the operationalisation of the Multi-Agency Anti-Kidnap Fusion Cell at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre developed with support from the United Kingdom National Crime Agency to address kidnapping and related crimes. Additionally, dedicated emergency numbers will be made available to facilitate timely reporting and intervention.”
Reflecting on 2024, Ribadu acknowledged tough challenges, including the resurgence of the Lakurawa terrorist group in the North-West and sabotage of critical infrastructure. However, he commended the resilience of the armed forces, security agencies, and Nigerians in confronting these threats.
“The year 2024 brought its share of security challenges, yet we’ve witnessed remarkable resilience from our security personnel and citizens alike,” he said. “Your sacrifices on the front lines, despite the harshest conditions, demonstrate staunch patriotism, courage, and dedication.”
Ribadu praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, attributing the progress made to his strong political will and the collaboration between security agencies, the intelligence community, and Nigerians. He also appreciated the families of security personnel for their support.
He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively involved in the fight against insecurity, saying “Security is everyone’s responsibility. The fight against terrorism and criminality cannot be won without the active participation of citizens. If you see something, say something.”
