ColumnsOpinionUnited States“Justice for George Floyd” by a Traumatized Mother of a Black Man

I am the mother of a Black Man (there are many of us), I am traumatized by the death of George Floyd. His mother, just like me, was a mother of a Black Man.

I am a traumatized mother of a Black Man and I’m telling you that this isn’t about politics, this is about human rights and as human beings we are better than this, we have to do better than this. Our sons have a right to come home alive.

If you are not speaking about this, you are not helping. Use your voice in your sphere of influence to effect change. Use your voice in your family, amongst your friends and in your community knowing that your words matter. Write to your elected officials. Talk to your children and your grandchildren, let them know that racism kills. Let’s talk.

It is obvious from the global reaction to George Floyd’s murder that not all Caucasians are racist and I know this because I have many, many wonderful, loving Caucasian friends who are speaking out against his murder.

Cellphone which has become the “voice” and defense for the weak and in this case the dead. Simply point, focus and record – alibi!

The views of racist cohorts have been well entrenched in their cultures since colonization and their atrocious acts are well documented in pictures. Oftentimes people argue that the pictures are ‘photoshopped’ (go figure); however, the same and worse atrocities have continued. The only difference is that today atrocious crimes and sickening displays of racism, ignorance, prejudice and bigotry is captured and are well documented (thank goodness) by the ever-present, ever-ready and unblinking eyes of the mighty cellphone which has become the “voice” and defense for the weak and in this case the dead. Simply point, focus and record – alibi!

Mr. George Floyd will never go home to his family, he will never grow older. George has not been spending the past few nights in the company of his family and friends. He hasn’t had any meals nor made quick dashes to the shop, he hasn’t been watching television nor reached for his favorite drink in his refrigerator, you know, those things we all take for granted. Instead, he has been in an ice cold morgue, even his cell phone alarm cannot wake him up now, no knocks on the door can wake him up.

Right now George is simply waiting; waiting for the final dress up, for that final visit, before the final procession to the lonely and eternal embrace of the grave. Nothing about his death is right or fair, it is starkly senseless. What are you waiting for? Do something.
