InfrastructureNewsNigeriaPedestrian Bridge Contractor Apologises to the State Government and Residents

Residents of Enugu have decried the substandard pedestrian bridge which collapsed while still under construction at Gariki, Amaechi Awkunanaw, in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The pedestrian bridge was commissioned by the current administration for the safe road crossing of residents of the ever-busy Gariki which is at the outskirt of the city and houses a popular food market, Gariki market.

However, a couple of days ago, residents witnessed the fall of the bridge, luckily no casualty.

Consequent upon the snap of the bridge, Barkindo Nigeria Ltd, the contractor of the failed bridge has apologised to the government while taking full responsibility for the unfortunate incident.

In a letter signed by the project director, Mbachu Chidiebere, to the Enugu State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, dated June 15, 2020, the company described the incident as very unfortunate while thanking God that no life was lost.

“The snap of the formwork took us by surprise because we have been responsive and maintained standard operational practice, especially during concreting, in line with the standard guidelines and specifications of Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure”, Mbachu wrote.

He went on to tender an unreserved apology to the people and government of Enugu State while reassuring all of the company’s commitment towards completing the project as designed.

“We have put in place measures to mitigate any such occurrence in future and will resume work accordingly as soon as we receive approval from Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure,” the contractor said.

However, residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the work so far while calling on government to take necessary steps to forestall a repeat of such incidence.

Mrs. Nkeiru C., a resident and civil servant said, “we call on relevant authorities to hasten and clear the debris from the fallen bridge and ensure that such ugly incidence do no occur again”.
