The death of a member of the Enugu State Seventh House of Assembly in the midst of spread of COVID-19 in the state has sparked off a rumor that the 49-year-old lawmaker died of the virus.
But the family of the deceased on Tuesday debunked media reports insisting that he died of heart failure.
Mr. Ejike Ugwueze, the immediate younger brother of the deceased stated this when the wives of Enugu State lawmakers paid their member, Mrs Amaka Ugwueze a condolence visit.
“Our family is embarrassed and saddened by the media report that our brother died of COVID-19. Chijioke Ugwueze died of heart failure as contained in his death certificate,” he reiterated.
Ugwueze further called on the general public to disregard the report, which according to him is baseless and malicious.
Earlier, Mrs. Nnenna Ubosi, the Speaker’s wife and leader of the group sympathized with their member and wife of the deceased, Mrs. Amaka Ugwueze and promised to stand by her in this time of grief.
“As one big and happy family, we the wives of the legislators mourn the death of your husband with you. He was very good to us when he was alive and contributed to the development of the state”, Ubosi said.
Mrs. Ubosi then assured the wife of the deceased lawmaker of their unflinching support. “We will not abandon you in this your moment of grief,” Ubosi promised.
Chijioke Ugwueze died on Friday evening at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital Parklane at the age of 49. Until his demise, he represented Isi-Uzo constituency and was Committee Chairman on Transport, Intergovernmental affairs and House Services.
