The National Association of Polytechnic Students, NAPS, has given President Muhammadu Buhari a 14-day ultimatum to sign the bill seeking to end the disparity between Higher National Diploma, HND, and Bachelor of Science, B.Sc, holders.

A bill that sought to erase the age-long inequality between degree holders and HND holders in the country was passed by the Senate in June 2021, but President Buhari has yet to give his assent.

The president’s overdue silence on the issue has left many stakeholders and concerned Nigerians puzzled about whether he would sign or reject the bill, especially as he has a few weeks to leave office.

NAPS, in a statement signed by its Deputy Senate President, Adeniji Temitope, commended the ninth National Assembly for the “very good job”, adding that the President’s assent was imperative.

The students’ union threatened to boycott classes and stage a protest at the Presidential Villa, Abuja should President Buhari fail to sign the bill into law after 14 days.

The statement reads partly: “The Senate arm of the National Association of Polytechnic Students through the Office of the Deputy Senate President has agreed to shut down all polytechnics, colleges of technology and allied institutions that are awarding the Higher National Diploma across Nigeria if President Muhammadu Buhari does not assent to HND/Bsc dichotomy bill in the next fourteen (14) days.

“If President Muhammadu Buhari fails to assent to this bill within 14 working days, the polytechnic students across Nigeria will occupy Presidential Villa in Abuja and continue to cry until President Muhammadu Buhari assents to the bill.”

NAPS ended the statement by urging the President to “stop the HND/B.Sc dichotomy now and make it one of his major achievements and legacy as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
