The Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has commended the efforts of Kogi workers and other workers across Nigeria on the occasion of this year’s International Workers’ Day.

According to the Governor, the day provides an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices made by workers who form the backbone of our economy.

According to a goodwill message by the Governor on Monday, stated that he is proud of Kogi’s workforce, which he considers second to none, and recognizes their significant contribution to the development of the state and the nation.

He acknowledges the critical role of workers in the growth of the country and assures them that their sacrifices will not be in vain.

The governor’s administration recognises the substantial contribution of workers in various sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, and manufacturing, and credits their tireless efforts for the success of the state.

According to the message, despite the challenges of the past year, workers have remained committed to their work, and Bello pledges his administration’s commitment to continue supporting them, creating an enabling environment for them to thrive, and improving their working conditions and welfare.

On this Workers’ Day celebration, Bello once again expresses his heartfelt appreciation to all workers in Kogi State, acknowledging their hard work, dedication, and sacrifices for the state.

Meanwhile, the Yobe State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vowed to improve partnership with the Yobe State government led by Governor Mai Mala Buni for the improvement of welfare of workers and state citizens.

Comrade Muktar Musa Tarbutu, the chapter chairman announced this today while briefing journalists as part of activities marking the 2023 joint NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the May Day celebration in Damaturu, Yobe State.

“Your Excellency Sir, the NLC in the state is ready to partner with your administration for the betterment of Yobe citizens particularly now that you have a brand new mandate from the people of the state, also soliciting for consideration in the issue of inclusiveness into government committees as well as utility vehicle, allocation of pilgrimage seat for the council among others,” he said.

He added, “The May Day celebration gives us an opportunity to share our concerns about the global trends and examine ways we can improve our roles and conditions as members of the nation’s working class. As united members of civilized humanity, we also collectively reflect over the state of our services. The theme of this year’s (2023) Joined NLC TUC May Day celebration is “workers’ rights and socio-economic justice”.

“As we are recovering from a number of crises both nationally and internationally which are affecting our living conditions, socially and economically, the impact, though varies from state to state, has increased poverty and inequalities at a greater scale. Economic and vulnerable groups are fundamental to inform and tailor the responses of governments and partners to recover from the crises and ensure that no one is left behind in this effort”.

“Without urgent socio-economic responses, human suffering will escalate, jeopardizing lives and livelihoods. Immediate development responses in this crisis must be undertaken with an eye to the future. Development trajectories in the long-term will be affected by the choices and the support they receive. Therefore, the NLC will continue to be at the forefront to ensure justice is done to such issues”.

The NLC chair used the forum to appeal to Governor Mai Mala Buni to extend his concerns towards facilitating this process for their members to benefit more. “We are also appealing to the government to commence deduction and remit to the bank as this will pave the way for the remaining batches to benefit”.

Speaking on education sector, Comrade Muktar Musa Tarbutu said “Sir, the congress remains resolute and awaits to see the outcome arising from government pronouncement of emergency on education which recently gave birth to launching of educational appeal fund. It is no gainsaying that the problems of teachers alone have reached an alarming proportion to the system and need to be addressed with utmost urgency for education to attain its rightful position.”
