President Muhammadu Buhari who has been out of the country since May 3 will spend an extra week in London, Femi Adesina has said.

The West African Pilot News reports that President Buhari departed for London on Wednesday, May 3 to join other world leaders to attend the coronation of King Charles lll on May 6, 2023.

In a statement on Tuesday, Adesina, the special adviser to the President on media and publicity, explained that the extension was informed by a dental procedure the President will undergo in the next five days.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will be in London, United Kingdom, for an additional week, at the behest of his Dentist, who has started attending to him,” the statement reads.

“The Specialist requires to see the President in another five days for a procedure already commenced.”

Due to President Buhari’s absence, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo presided over the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting at the State House, Abuja on Wednesday.

Similarly, President-elect Bola Tinubu left for Europe on Wednesday – two weeks after he returned from Paris.

Tinubu’s media aide, Tunde Rahman said the trip was to enable the president-elect “fine-tune his transition plans and programmes” and “engage with investors and other key allies” ahead of his inauguration.

“Reviving the country’s economy forms a major plank of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda and the meeting is part of his efforts to re-establish Nigeria’s importance in the global economic chain and create empowering opportunities for the country’s huge youth population,” the statement noted.

“The President-elect has hitherto promised to hit the ground running and the visit is reflective of his commitment to the promise as he has already begun talks with global actors in the important areas of the economy and security.”

Both the President and the President-elect are expected to return shortly for preparations for the official swearing-in of Tinubu as the 16th President of Nigeria on May 29, 2023.
