NewsFuel Subsidy Removal: Mutfwang, Oborevwori warn dealers against exploitation, hoarding

Following the inaugural speech of President Bola Tinubu announcing the removal of fuel subsidy, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has charged petroleum marketers not to take advantage of the situation to hoard fuel and exploit citizens.

On his part, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has warned fuel marketers in the state against hoarding petroleum products especially Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Mutfwang in a press statement issued through his media aide, Gyang Bere noted that while the government has taken deliberate steps to ease hardship and pains of citizens, petroleum marketers should avoid creating unnecessary scarcity and hike in prices of the product.

He said that if the quest to build a new and united Plateau, must be concretised, citizens must take deliberate steps to avoid issues that will further inflict hardship and pains on already traumatised citizens.

He said as a government that prioritises the wellbeing of its people, actions that tend to impede that goal must be resisted.

Mutfwang appealed to all petrol stations in the state to open their outlets and commence sale of the product to curtail artificial scarcity that is being experienced in most parts of the state.

He warned that the state government won’t condone any form of extortion of the people, pointing out that any such attempt won’t be tolerated.

Report has it that most of the filling stations in Jos where a litre of petrol which sold for N220, now sells for N350,000 per litre after Tinubu’s speech.

While in Delta State, Oborevwori through his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon in a statement on Tuesday noted that the state government would not tolerate acts that would make life difficult for Deltans.

According to Oborevwori, the state government’s desire is to grow the economy of the state through its MORE agenda.

He sought the support of all stakeholders in his determination to make life more meaningful for Deltans.

The statement read, “We have heard and seen the reaction of petroleum marketers in the state to the announcement of alleged subsidy removal by President Bola Tinubu.

He said that the state government has been inundated with reports of filling stations in the state hoarding products and thereby creating artificial scarcity with intent to hike prices.

“As a government, we won’t watch marketers exploit Deltans of their hard earned income through creation of artificial scarcity,” he said.

He called on marketers to be patriotic and continue selling their products to the general public at the official pump price.

Oborevwori maintained that the relevant government agencies have been directed to monitor the situation and ensure total compliance with the directive.

The state government, won’t hesitate to take necessary action against any filling station hoarding the product or caught selling above the official price,” the statement read.
