President Bola Tinubu has approved the return of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, to the Office of the Vice President for supervision.
In September 2019, the immediate past Vice President, Yemi Osibanjo was stripped of his supervisory powers over some federal government agencies, including NEMA and NAHCON.
Osibanjo was accused of breaching due process in running the affairs of the agencies.
Following the removal of the agencies from the VP’s supervision, NEMA and the National Social Investment Programme, NSIP, were moved from his office to the newly-created Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, headed by Sadiya Umar Farouq while NAHCON was reporting to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Olusola Abiola, the director of information for the Office of the Vice President, said the return of the agencies to the VP’s office complied with the laws establishing the agencies.
Abiola also stated that President Tinubu equally approved a formal structure for the Office of the Vice President as well as an appropriate number of technical and administrative aides that would work with the number two citizen in the discharge of his responsibilities.
