Students of the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Nigeria, UNN, have staged a protest over the incessant increase in the price of textbooks and manuals by authorities in the faculty.
The protesting students, who carried placards with various inscriptions depicting their grievances, matched around the university premises on Friday.
The peaceful protest started at the pharmacy complex, to the security department then down to the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
The students also protested against “indiscriminate fees” such as faculty development levy, faculty and departmental dues.
A student who spoke on anonymity said, “We are complaining about paying N20,000 development levy to the faculty, as well as faculty and department dues again. These payments are done yearly.
“We are also protesting against the high cost of practical manuals (materials) which we have been mandated to buy. These materials run into thousands every semester.
“We’re not finding it easy coping with the too many levies and constant bills which we pay in the pharmacy faculty and department.
“We want some consideration and moderation in the amounts we spend on fees and manuals and materials in the department and calling on the authorities concerned to allow the poor to breathe.”
