The Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to Nigeria, Barry Andrews has presented their final report on the 2023 election in Nigeria to INEC National Chairman Prof Mahmoud Yakubu in Abuja.
The report exposed some areas that require further legal and operational reforms to enhance transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability in the system.
Mr. Andrews observed that the shortcomings in law had damaged trust in INEC due to electoral administration that stalled the conduct of well-run and inclusive elections.
The EU EOM offered 23 recommendations for consideration by the Nigerian authorities with six priority areas that need for reform.
“The priority areas include the removal of ambiguities in the law, establishment of a publicly accountable selection process for INEC members, and ensuring real-time publication of and access to election results.
“Other areas include the provision of greater protection for media practitioners, addressing discrimination against women in political life, and impunity regarding electoral offenses,” Andrews said.
He noted that Inclusive dialogue amongst all stakeholders on electoral reform remains central and stressed the need for political will to achieve improved democratic practices in Nigeria.
