Hon. Augustine Onyekachukwu Ike, the member representing Nnewi North Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, has called on President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the 10th National Assembly to create a sixth state in the southeast geopolitical zone within one year.
Ike, who made the appeal in an open letter dated 29 June 2023 and addressed to President Tinubu, gave a couple of arguments to support his thesis, which he said are “not only compelling but are grounded in history.”
He suggested that the State when created should be named Ikemba State with its capital in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The lawmaker argued that the essence of creating the sixth state is for equity and fairness.
“In the very essence of democracy is the need to strike balance. If Nigeria is founded on six geopolitical zones and each of five geopolitical zones has six states, it is then equitable that every geopolitical zone must have six states,” Ike emphasised
“Thus, Nigeria cannot on grounds of good logic be said to have six geopolitical zones until Mr President accents to the proposal to create the sixth State in the Southeast in the spirit of equity and fairness.”
While noting that the creation of Ikemba State will “tranquilise all agitations in the South East”, he said it will also “serve as another economic hub in Nigeria and a pilot state towards a new Nigeria.”
Ike urged President Tinubu to create the “remaining State for the South East zone within one year”, adding that doing so will make the President “the greatest President in the history of Nigeria.”

A timely submission which might pacify the plights of the Southeast especially the victimization against them in recent times.
