NewsNigeriaPoliticsNigerian military clears the air on plans of overthrowing Tinubu

The Nigerian military has described alleged demands by some Nigerians for the armed forces to oust President Bola Tinubu from power as witnessed in neighbouring Niger on July 26 as ‘wicked’.

Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, the defence headquarters’ director of information, in a statement issued on Friday, said such was an “attempt to distract the Armed Forces of Nigeria from performing it’s constitutional responsibilities.”

Gusau, who was reacting to a report accusing the Nigerian government of negligence of soldiers peddled by a popular online media platform, noted that the General Gwabin Musa-led armed forces prioritises the welfare of its personnel.

The director said the military is satisfied with the democracy in Nigeria and will not be part of any plan to sabotage it.

“We detest any attempt by any individual or group to instigate the law abiding Armed Forces of Nigeria to embark on any unconstitutional change of government in our country,” Gusau stressed.

“We wish to state unequivocally that the military is happy and better under democracy and will not get involved in any act to sabotage the hard-earned democracy in our country.”

He added: “The AFN under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa is determined to ensure complete subordination of the Armed Forces to constitutional authority under His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and will not be distracted from its roles that are well defined in the 1999 constitution (as amended).”
