The Court of Appeal in Abuja has nullified the March 18 governorship election that brought Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State to power.
The governorship poll was a hard-fought contest between Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Bello Mattawale of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Lawal won the election with a total of 377,726 votes while the APC candidate polled 311,976 votes, according to official results.
Matawalle, now serving as the Minister of State for Defence, challenged the results at the election tribunal in Zamfara, but the tribunal, on September 16, ruled in favour of Lawal.
The APC candidate went ahead to lodge an appeal at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, challenging the judgement of the tribunal.
The Court of Appeal has now overturned the judgement.
The court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a rerun of the governorship poll in three local government areas of Maradun, Birnin-magaji and Bukyun.
The court ruled that it was wrong for INEC to rely on data from the INEC Result Viewing, IReV, portal to collate the final result of the governorship election.
