The Bishop of Yola Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza has distributed no fewer than 500 bags of 50kg of rice to 1,500 needy Christians in the state capital.
Mamza who also is the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Adamawa State said the rice palliative came from the presidency, and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the gesture.
He noted that palliative care would go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the needy among the church members.
According to the cleric, he deemed it right to personally oversee the distribution of the palliatives to ensure that the rice was fairly and justly distributed amongst the needy.
“As a matter of conscience, I decided to do the distribution myself across most of the churches that are situated within Jimeta. We decided to select between 10 to 20 beneficiaries from different churches and all the blocks of CAN.
“So we invited them here to give them the rice which the president sent for them as palliatives because of the challenges being faced by the people. Because of my experience of the past, where people complained that they were not getting such interventions we decided to pool the people together in one place so that nobody should complain that the rice has not been distributed as expected.
“There are 500 bags of rice and we invited 1000 beneficiaries, that is 25kg per head so by seeing the crowd here and looking at their condition you know that they need the palliative. I am happy that I have done it this way and I also want to thank the president for giving out a palliative,” Mamza said.
The Bishop while calling on the president to strengthen monitoring of MDAs to ensure that resources earmarked for the good of all Nigerians are not mismanaged, and urged the president to redouble his efforts towards alleviating the suffering in the land.
Some of the beneficiaries Mr Bitrus Bwala and Elizabeth John expressed appreciation to Adamawa CAN for transparency in the distribution of the items they received from the Federal Government.
They noted that the food item would assist their families due to the current economic hardship challenges occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidies.
