Barrister Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party, LP, narrowly escaped a fire that engulfed his residence in Abuja early on Wednesday.
The LP alleges the fire may have been a deliberate attempt on Abure’s life.
According to a statement issued by the party’s national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the fire started shortly after 1:00 a.m. while Abure and his family were asleep.
Neighbours and security personnel stationed at the compound raised the alarm, alerting the family to the inferno.
“The entire family were trapped as the inferno had reached the staircase, making it impossible for Abure and family to escape,” the statement detailed.
They claim “divine intervention” played a role, as neighbours and security guards managed to break a window on the upper floor, allowing the family to escape.
Abure and his family received medical attention afterwards but their condition is stable.
“Abure and his family were rushed to a private hospital where they are presently receiving treatment. Their condition is however stable,” Ifoh said.
Nigerian authorities have not commented yet, but a full investigation is expected.
