The Board and Management of Urban Radio 94.5FM Enugu regrets the abrupt disruption of their live program tagged Prime-Time and arrest of the presenter Favour Ekoh, on Monday at about 6.35pm by officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

A public notice by the management of the radio station states, “Armed men identifying as the EFCC had barged into the studio and interrupted the live program “Prime-Time”, forcefully abducted our presenters and took away our communication equipment for reasons they vehemently refused to disclose.”

Meanwhile, the Head Media & Publicity of the Commission Mr. Dele Oyewale in a statement claims Ekoh was not arrested while on-air and there was no disruption of the lawful activities of the Radio Station.

Oyewale throwing more light on the presenter’s alleged offence further said none of the equipment of the Station was tampered with; also she and her co-workers were released after writing Statement at the EFCC Enugu Zonal office.

“A team of operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, comprising four officers were at Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu to invite one Favour Ekoh, host of Prime Time, a programme running at the Station.”

“Ekoh is being investigated by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC in an alleged N700 million Ponzi scheme fraud involving about Fifty (50) victims; Ekoh is a principal suspect in the Ponzi scheme.

“According to the victims, Ekoh allegedly lured them into investing in a scheme “Life Trading” in a company, Leverage Index Limited, where they were offered returns on investment of 10 percent of their capital after a period of time.”

“The victims alleged that after investing their money into the company located at No. 1 Colliery Street, Okpara Avenue, Enugu State, the company closed its office with no return on investment or principal returned to the victims.”

“Ekoh allegedly invited the victims into the business and she remained the only link the victims could hold.”

The Commission’s Media officer further said the operatives involved in the sting operation went with warrant of arrest for Favour Ekoh, communicated same to the Managing Director of the Station, Bamikole Owoyomi.

But was surprised at the turn of events when the Chairman of the Radio Station ordered that the operatives be locked in;

“Faced with such hostility, they (the operatives) called for a rescue team which eventually arrested Omoyomi, Ekoh and the two security guards who locked them within the premises of the Station.”

Oyewale further explained that the presenter, Ekoh, was trailed to the station to ensure she does not escape given the magnitude of the fraudulent business and the money involved.

Acknowledging the media as the fourth estate of the realm and a critical stakeholder in the fight against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption, the Commission however condemned the station for obstructing officers on duty.

“The Commission hereby calls on the International Press Institute, IPI, and the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, to investigate the conduct of the Station in the light of integrity and ethical professional practice.”
