Governors from Nigeria’s South-West region have resolved to establish a joint surveillance team to combat rising insecurity, including the growing threat posed by the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The decision was reached on Thursday during a four-hour meeting at the Lagos State House, Alausa, Ikeja, under the aegis of the South-West Governors’ Forum (SGF).

The meeting had in attendance Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), and Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti).

Speaking after the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who chairs the forum, said the move is a proactive response to emerging security threats in the region.

“The forum agreed to appoint special advisors on security in each state and to establish a joint surveillance monitoring team which we believe will oversee and coordinate security efforts across the region,” he stated.

He further disclosed that the governors would “deploy advanced technology, including area surveillance systems,” and strengthen intelligence gathering through collaboration with state security agencies, local vigilantes, and federal enforcement authorities.

The governors also commended President Bola Tinubu for his economic reforms, which they said had stabilised the naira and ensured a steady supply of petrol across the country.

They further acknowledged his role in establishing the South-Western Development Commission, agreeing that its headquarters should be located in Ibadan at Cocoa House, owned by Odua Investment Company Limited.

In addition to security measures, the governors resolved to establish joint food hubs and a food inflation monitoring team to tackle soaring food prices and enhance food security in the region.

Sanwo-Olu reiterated that the forum remains committed to fostering regional stability and economic development, urging citizens to support government initiatives for a safer and more prosperous South-West.
