Hon. Nanloong Daniel, representing Mikang constituency in Plateau state, has been elected as the new speaker, following the resignation of Hon. Gabriel Dewan.
The change in leadership followed a closed-door meeting between Governor Caleb Mutfwang, former Speaker Gabriel Dewan, and other lawmakers, aimed at addressing the ongoing political tension in the assembly over the leadership crisis.
Members of the Assembly conducted the election of the new speaker, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Gwotta Ajang, during an emergency sitting at the temporary Assembly Complex, located at the Old Government House in Jos, on Wednesday.
Daniel, a former majority leader in the 9th Assembly, was unanimously chosen by his colleagues to lead the 24-member legislature.
Dewan, the sole legislator from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the Assembly, who is from Plateau Central, resigned amid efforts to stabilize the state’s political situation, which many have been yearning for since the sacking of the PDP lawmakers from the house.
