At least 71 embassies have signalled interest in participating in the 2025 edition of Carnival Calabar, reaffirming the international appeal of what is widely regarded as Africa’s biggest street party.
Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, made this disclosure on Friday during the commissioning of the newly remodelled Channel View Hotel in Calabar, a major hospitality investment expected to boost tourism in the state ahead of the carnival.
Governor Otu emphasised that the growing number of international delegations seeking participation in the festival underlines the urgent need for world-class hospitality infrastructure.
“We had over 40 ambassadors request participation last year, but could only host 12. This year, we’ve received applications from 71 embassies. That tells you why this kind of investment is not only welcome but urgent,” he said.
He commended the owners of Channel View Hotel for independently executing the extensive upgrade without requesting government funding. He described the renovation as a timely and strategic intervention in the state’s tourism economy.
“This is a beautiful day, and I thank God for the opportunity to witness the rebirth of this edifice,” Otu noted. “The Chairman has already mentioned my involvement with this hotel over the years, and I’m grateful to see it restored to excellence. You never asked us for a dime, yet you’ve raised the standard to a level that aligns with what we envision for Cross River.”
Speaking on the State’s development agenda, Governor Otu reiterated his administration’s commitment to partnering with credible private investors in hospitality and other critical sectors.
“We are open for business and partnership. If you have a viable idea and need support, this government is willing to back you. This is a people-first administration, and through strategic collaboration, we will build a stronger Cross River,” he said.
Chairman of Channel View Hotel, Etiyin Asuquo Ekpenyong, described the reopening as a deeply personal and historic moment, recalling the hotel’s long-standing ties with Governor Otu.
“You have always been part of Channel View’s story; from your days in Abuja as a lawmaker to your wedding here in Calabar. Today’s commissioning simply renews a bond that already exists,” he said.
He explained that the hotel had to shut down for a comprehensive facelift following infrastructural stress sustained during the 2023 political campaign season.
“We realised the entire structure needed a reset, and today, we’re proud to present a new Channel View, modern, refreshed, and positioned for the future,” he said.
Also speaking, Executive Director of the hotel, Mr Andrew Ekpenyong, noted that this marks the fifth major upgrade since the hotel was established in 2001.
He expressed optimism that the newly refurbished facility, with its 100 redesigned guest rooms, fine-dining restaurant, and enhanced amenities, would revitalise tourism and business confidence in Calabar.
“Despite economic headwinds, we persevered. Today, we boast 100 newly furnished guest rooms, a fine-dining restaurant, and modern amenities fit for international guests. We thank God for making this possible,” Ekpenyong said.
The event attracted top government functionaries and industry stakeholders, including former Governor Donald Duke, former Deputy Governor Prof. Ivara Esu, Secretary to the State Government Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh, and Chief of Staff Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar.
