The Benue State Government has launched an Emergency Management Response System and a Q-20 drone surveillance service to enhance rapid response to herdsmen attacks, road accidents, fire outbreaks, and flood disasters.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, who unveiled the platforms in Makurdi, said it is part of a digital emergency initiative facilitated by the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in collaboration with the Benue Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC).
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Selumun Aber, Governor Alia said the platforms, which will be accessible through QR codes, are designed to ensure that accurate information on insecurity and emergencies is delivered to the appropriate authorities in real time.
“The Q-Twenty drone surveillance system boasts a flight capacity of 150 kilometers and an endurance time of seven hours, providing real-time monitoring in high-risk areas.
“Social media handles were also given for the public to report emergencies quickly.
“The public can now report emergency incidents such as herdsmen attacks, violent displacements, market fires, communal clashes, disease outbreaks, road traffic accidents, IDP camp needs, and other critical incidents,” he said.
Managing Director of BDIC, Mr Terwase Gbande, encouraged the public to embrace the digital tools provided for handling emergencies, while Chairman of the Benue State House of Assembly Committee on ICT and Digital Economy, Mr Kennedy Angbo, hailed the innovation as one of the administration’s most impactful initiatives.
Also speaking, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, and SEMA, Sir James Iorpuu, described the move as a step toward a smarter and more transparent emergency response process.
