The former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has expressed sadness over the demise of a former Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase, describing the deceased police Chief as his friend and partner. According to Obiano, “Dr. Arase was not only a very good friend but also a professional police officer whose unfettered cooperation helped us to make Anambra the safest state in Nigeria during my tenure,” the former governor said. Recollecting their last conversation, Chief Obiano said the late police Chief was in high spirits and showed no sign of anything serious to suggest “imminent demise.”
In a statement signed by Dr. Paul Nwosu, the former governor noted how the ex-IGP came to Anambra to launch the first phase of Operation Kpochapu. “He recounted how IGP Arase personally came to Anambra State to launch the first phase of Operation Kpochapu, an anti-crime initiative that transformed security management in the state. On that occasion, Governor Obiano donated 25 smart patrol cars fitted with advanced communication gadgets, while Arase commissioned a state-of-the-art Communication and Control Room for the Joint Security Taskforce,” part of the statement reads.
Following the seal of approval of the first phase of Operation Kpochapu by the late IGP, Obiano recalled that his administration was encouraged to expand on what was done in the first phase. During this second phase, the Obiano’s administration then released 111 Innoson-made patrol vehicles, 71 smart motorbikes, 49 pick-up trucks, 9 mobile surveillance vans, and 3 heavy-duty trucks, all equipped with a modern communication system, and were distributed to all security operatives in Anambra State. With this move, Anambra State was promptly secured and safely hosted the 12th Police Games.
Paying his tribute to the demised IGP, former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, described him as “a brilliant and thoroughbred police officer who brought uncommon creativity to law enforcement. His friendship, his professionalism, and his support will never be forgotten. The law enforcement community and indeed the entire country have lost a gem. I pray that his soul rests in peace,” Obiano said.
