Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, with two people confirmed dead.
The accident occurred around noon along the Shagamu Exchange/Sinoma area near the Sagamu axis of the busy highway.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, said the crash happened along the Shagamu Exchange axis of the expressway and that the Lagos State Government immediately deployed an ambulance to the scene.
Photos from the crash site showed a shirtless Joshua standing amid the wreckage, surrounded by sympathisers. He had no visible serious injuries.
Oluseyi Babaseyi, spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the casualties.
“Two people are confirmed dead from the accident, and Joshua only suffered minor injuries,” Babaseyi said.
He added that the police command would release more details later.
Preliminary reports indicated that the accident occurred when a Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN, in which Joshua was travelling, collided with a stationary truck on the highway.
Further clarification was provided by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which released the findings of its preliminary investigation.
In a statement, the FRSC said the crash was caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
According to the statement, Joshua’s vehicle was “travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor” and “lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre” before crashing into the stationary truck.
“The primary causes of the crash, being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the statement reads.
The FRSC confirmed that the two deceased victims have been conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu, while the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) has been notified for further investigation.
The corps also extended condolences to the bereaved families.
“To this end, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, on behalf of the entire Management and staff of the Federal Road Safety Corps, extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the injured victim, Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery,” the statement reads.
The accident came just nine days after Joshua knocked out Jake Paul in an exhibition heavyweight bout at the Kaseya Centre, Miami. Joshua has been in Nigeria on a yuletide holiday since the fight.
