Some parts of Kano’s popular commodity market, Singer Market, located along Bello Road in the Kano metropolis, were razed down in the early hours of Monday.
Singer Market is one of Kano’s major food markets, supplying a wide range of items to several northern states and neighbouring countries.
The spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, said the incident occurred at about 5:00 a.m. and firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene to contain the blaze.
“Personnel of the service were mobilized to the scene to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the market,” Abdullahi said.
Preliminary reports indicated that commodities worth millions of naira were destroyed in the inferno, and shop owners had rushed to the market to salvage their goods.
