No fewer than 500 residents in Ijero Ekiti, Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State, have been displaced by torrential rainstorms, and about 200 houses have been destroyed.
According to reports, residential buildings, religious centres, market stalls, and public institutions, including the Ekiti State College of Technology, Ijero Ekiti, were severely affected by the heavy downpour, which lasted for over two hours.
Meanwhile, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, during an on-the-spot assessment of the situation, sympathized with the victims and assured them of government assistance.
Governor Oyebanji who was represented by his deputy, described the level of destruction as heartbreaking, noting that many roofs were blown off while several buildings were reduced to ruins.
The governor stated that his administration had spent over ₦300 million in the past year to assist victims of fire and rainstorm disasters across the state.
He directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to conduct proper enumeration to ensure that affected property owners receive support for rebuilding.
The Ajero of Ijero Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adewole, described the storm as devastating and unprecedented, while the Rector of the College of Technology, Dr. Moses Olubamise, confirmed that five buildings and ongoing projects were damaged, though examinations continued after emergency adjustments.
