NewsNigeriaPoliticsTinubu Welcomes Egbetokun’s Resignation, Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu as Acting IGP.

The announcement was made in a Statehouse press release on Tuesday, 24 February 2026. According to the statement, Egbetokun cited “pressing family considerations” in his resignation letter.

President Tinubu received the letter and “expressed his profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation,” noting his “dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening internal security architecture during his tenure.”

Egbetokun, appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027 under the amended provisions of the Police Act. His tenure had previously attracted public attention following an extension enabled by the July 2024 Police Act Amendment, which allowed him to remain in office beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60.

In the press release, the presidency stated that “in view of the current security challenges confronting the nation, and acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.”

The statement added that the President is confident that AIG Disu’s “experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period.”

Under the Police Act 2020, the next step is for the President to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

President Tinubu concluded by reiterating his administration’s commitment to national security, institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force “remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.”

AIG Tunji Disu, born 13 April 1966, was previously decorated as AIG by Egbetokun and served as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.

He is a former head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Disu, a graduate of English Education from Lagos State University, also holds two master’s degrees in Administration and Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology. He assumed duty at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, in February 2026.

The formalisation of Egbetokun’s resignation and Disu’s appointment follows earlier reports on Tuesday that the former had stepped down at the President’s instruction.
