IBADAN — Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has stressed the importance of education, urging Nigerians to stop discriminating against the girl-child, especially in the area of education.
Prof. Oloyede made the call while speaking at a lecture with the theme, “Celebration of the Girl-child Education” in Ibadan on Sunday.
The JAMB registrar said that every child deserves to be educated regardless of gender, maintaining, however, that more attention should be given to the education of the girl-child.
“Every child, male or female, deserves to be educated.
“From the statistics available from the university, if you go to the registration centre now, you will see that less than 60 per cent of those registering for UTME are girls.
“This used to be from a particular part of the country before but it has spread to other parts of the country. Therefore, we must change our slogan, as education of every child matters,” Prof. Oloyede said.
