Civil servants in Enugu State on Wednesday under the auspices of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, call on the State Governor, Dr. Ndubuisi Mbah to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal by increasing workers’ salaries.
Speaking on behalf of workers, the Chairman of NLC Enugu Chapter, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo made the appeal during a peaceful protest at the Government House.
“Since the removal of the fuel subsidy, the country has known no peace. In 2019, civil servants were given a minimum wage of N30,000 while the prices of fuel have increased to about N617, N 620, and N700 depending.”
“From N30,000, we pay rent, hospital bills, school fees, and buy fuel. We appeal to you to do something about it.
“So we want his Excellency, to take our message to the Federal Government; the policies are affecting the masses and many are suffering,” Nwigbo said.
The NLC Chairman further appealed to the State Governor to provide palliatives to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidies in the state.
Ben Asogwa of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Enugu Chapter, supporting the NLC Chairman’s appeal to the State Government stated that the Union is on a rescue mission for poor Nigerians.
“Nigerian workers are not trouble makers but fighting for the well-being of Nigerians as the cost of living has gone very high. Salaries of workers who are car owners cannot fuel their cars monthly,” Asogwa reiterates.
In his response, the Enugu State Governor represented by Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, commended Labour leaders for leading a peaceful protest.
He revealed that the Enugu State Governor had on Tuesday set up a committee to provide palliatives to Enugu citizens to cushion the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy.
“Palliative does not solve problems but we are going to look at the remote cause of these challenges with a focus on medium to long term plan in solving the problems.”
Promising to alleviate the masses’ suffering via interventions in transportation, the Deputy Governor further reveals the State Government’s plans to subsidize healthcare services and reduce the cost of living in the state.
The peaceful protesters converged at the Labour House at the New Market area and walked to Government House Enugu carrying placards with inscriptions such as;
“Federal Government why to protect subsidy criminals?”; “We demand a stop to inhumane policies of Government”.
