The Enugu State Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities appeals to the State Government to ensure full inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in the distribution of the fuel subsidy palliatives.

Appreciating the Federal Government for allocating funds to cushion the economic effects of recent fuel price increases, the State Chairman Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), Comrade Onyebuchi Mba, in a press statement expressed her displeasure at the non-inclusion of the group in the committee set up by the State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah for the distribution of the palliatives.

“This goodwill should have been better appreciated if the Government of Hon. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah includes the representative of persons with disabilities into his recently constituted palliative committee to demonstrate inclusiveness, and the slogan that ‘NOTHING FOR US WITHOUT US’.

“However, this is never too late, as we appeal to Enugu State Government to ensure the full inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in the distribution of these palliatives,” Comrade Mba stated.

Mbah further stated, “It is crucial to recognize that persons with disabilities are often the worst hit in any socioeconomic crisis. Their vulnerability extends beyond the need for palliatives and requires deliberate planning and comprehensive measures to address their unique needs and challenges.”

“In Enugu State alone, there are over 200,000 persons with disabilities across the 17 local government areas. Many of them are struggling to have at least two square meals a day, let alone meet other essential needs. The social and economic impact of the recent fuel price increases has further exacerbated their plight, making it even more imperative to respond effectively and with empathy.”

The group then calls on policymakers, religious organizations, philanthropists, and other stakeholders to show compassion and empathy for the predicaments faced by persons with disabilities given the present-day realities in Nigeria.

“It is vital that the voices and concerns of this marginalized group are heard and addressed properly in policy decisions and resource distribution.”

“We urge the Enugu State Government to collaborate with disability organizations and civil society organizations to ensure PWDs are not left out of the fuel subsidy palliative distribution. We believe that through inclusive decision-making and equitable distribution of resources, we can alleviate the sufferings of persons with disabilities, providing them with the opportunity for a better quality of life.”

“Enugu State Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities stands ready to work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities in Enugu State. Together, we can build a society that leaves no one behind,” the group reiterates.
