After 33 years of closure by its previous representation in the country due to the 1991 Gulf War, Switzerland’s government has reopened its embassy in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
According to a statement on Tuesday by the Swiss Foreign Ministry, the reopening of the embassy followed the security situation after years of conflict that it is now safe to have a presence in Iraq again.
“Iraq is playing an increasingly important role as a bridge-builder and mediator in the Middle East and one of the aims of the embassy is to strengthen bilateral relations.
“In recent years, Iraq has repeatedly campaigned for regional peace and security.
“Iraq offers interesting long-term export and investment opportunities for Swiss companies,” the statement said.
