President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended his planned foreign trips to South Africa and Angola as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to secure the release of abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi State and respond to Monday’s deadly attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, in Kwara State.
The President was due to depart Abuja on Wednesday for Johannesburg to attend the 20th G20 Summit of Leaders, before proceeding to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit. However, he opted to remain in the country following what the Presidency described as “disturbing security breaches.”
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the wider Ekiti Local Government Area, following a request by the Kwara State Governor. He also directed the police to “go after the bandits who attacked worshippers.”
President Tinubu took the decision to postpone his engagements as he awaits “further security briefings” on the separate incidents that have gripped national attention this week.
The statement noted that the President is expecting detailed updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi State on his behalf to commiserate with the government and families of the abducted schoolgirls, as well as reports from the police and the Department of State Services on the Kwara church attack.
Reiterating his earlier directive to the security agencies, President Tinubu maintained that nothing should be spared in the effort to rescue the victims.
He was quoted as insisting that security operatives must “do everything possible to rescue the 24 schoolgirls, abducted by the bandits and bring the girls back home, safe.”
