…Each receives N100,000 Support From State Government
Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed has granted state pardon to 73 inmates across various correctional centres in the state under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended.
The Governor made this known during a ceremony held at the new Banquet hall of the Government House, Bauchi, describing the prerogative of mercy as a constitutional responsibility guided by compassion, justice, and fairness.
He said the release of inmates was based on recommendations by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, headed by the state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice.
The Governor then approved the sum of ₦100,000 for each of the released Inmates as assistance to help them start businesses of their choice and become productive in society.
Earlier, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Hassan EL-Yakub, said the Governor paid fines and compensation for inmates amounting to N3.8 million, including those with monetary penalties.
He called on the judiciary to adopt community service for minor offences rather than sending them to prisons.
In their separate responses, the Controller of the Nigeria Correctional Service in the state, Tade Monday, and religious leaders praised the Governor for the gesture and urged the freed inmates to be law-abiding and contribute positively to society.
