NewsNigeriaPoliticsTinubu Approves ₦15bn Take-Off Grant for New Police Academy in Ogun

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a ₦15 billion take-off grant to support its immediate development.

The approval, announced in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, is part of a broader plan to expand the country’s premier police training institution beyond its current base in Wudil, Kano State.

According to the statement, the decision aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the creation of additional campuses to meet the growing manpower and training needs of the Nigeria Police Force.

The ₦15 billion intervention fund will be drawn from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2026 allocation. It is expected to cover critical infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and essential training equipment required to kick-start operations at the new campus.

The siting of the institution in Erinja followed a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The meeting reportedly reviewed factors such as student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term operational needs of the police, particularly as recruitment efforts continue to expand nationwide.

The move comes amid ongoing concerns about the capacity of existing training institutions to handle the increasing number of recruits.

According to the statement, President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, improve the quality of police education, and enhance national security.

The Nigeria Police Academy, which awards degree certificates alongside professional police training, has long been seen as a key institution in the drive to professionalize the force.

The new Ogun campus is expected to ease pressure on the Wudil facility while bringing police training closer to the southern part of the country, potentially improving accessibility and regional balance in recruitment and training.
