ENUGU –– The South East Governors has expressed satisfaction with the progress so far on the rehabilitation and expansion of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu and assures the public of the commitment of President Buhari to the re-opening of the airport by 11th of March, 2020.

In the communiqué issued by the South East Governors Forum after their meeting on Sunday, 9th February, 2020, the Forum commended His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari for the prompt release of the special funds for the project and the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for the lands he made available for the project.

On the on-going rehabilitation of Enugu-Port Harcourt  Federal Highway, Okezie Ikpeazu, Governor of Abia State commended the efforts of the Federal Government on the speedy and quality work but expressed dissatisfaction with a number of sections that are yet to be attended to, especially the Aba-Port Harcourt axis being handled by a Chinese company.

While thanking Mr President and the Hon. Minister of Works for work so far, Governor Ikpeazu appealed that all the companies be fairly funded so as to attend to most of the deplorable sections before the rainy season.

Ikpeazu also assures the Forum of the success of the Enyimba Economic City and requested that the associated part of the programme, which is the ring road connecting the South East and South South be commenced.

The Anambra State Governor Chief Willy Obiano represented by his Deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke briefed the forum on the progress of work on the 2nd Niger Bridge. He showed the forum a full view of the on-going work and the stakeholders commended Mr President, the Hon. Minister of works, the Chief of Staff to Mr President and the Managing Director of National Social Insurance Authority (NSIA), Mr Uche Orji, for making the project a reality.

The Forum stated in confidence that with the level of funding by Mr. President, the project shall be completed during his tenure.

On the issue of security of the South East zone, the Chairman of South East Joint Security Committee expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made so far to get the South East State House of Assembly to enact laws to back up the South East Security programme. Recall that the South East Joint Security Committee formed on the 28th of July, 2019 was inaugurated on the 31st of August, 2019.

The South East Joint Security Committee however, assures the people of the collaborative efforts of the state vigilante and Forest Guards with the security agencies in all the South East States for protection of lives and property.
