EntertainmentNewsNigeriaGrammy: South Africa’s Tyla Wins Best African Music Performance Award

South African pop sensation Tyla has reaffirmed her growing global influence, winning the Best African Music Performance award at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards held on Sunday, 1 February 2026.

The triumph came in a highly competitive field that included some of Africa’s most celebrated music stars.

Tyla secured the accolade with her hit single “Push 2 Start”, lifting the trophy ahead of heavyweights such as Burna Boy for “Love”, Davido featuring Omah Lay for “With You”, Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid for “Gimme Dat”, and Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin for “Hope & Love”.

The Best African Music Performance category was established in 2024 by the Recording Academy to honour outstanding vocal or instrumental African music recordings, reflecting the continent’s expanding footprint in the global music industry.

Tyla’s win marks her second Grammy in this category, making her the first artist to claim the title twice since the award’s inception.

She first achieved the honour in 2024 for her chart-topping record “Water”, a milestone that introduced her to the global music stage.

For Nigeria, the night was one of unfulfilled expectations. Despite multiple nominations in top categories, no Nigerian artist has won a Grammy.

Established stars including Burna Boy, Davido, Omah Lay, Ayra Starr and Wizkid were all in contention, but ultimately none secured a win.

In the Best Global Music Album category, Burna Boy’s project “No Sign of Weakness” was widely tipped as a strong contender. However, it lost to Caetano Veloso & Maria Bethânia for their collaborative live album “Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo”.
