BusinessNewsNigeriaENUGU: ESHA urges ministry of power to review monopoly in electricity

The Enugu State House of Assembly today urged the Federal Ministry of Power to review the monopoly enjoyed by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). The lawmakers called for electricity deregulation which will deliver better benefits to the consumers, including lower prices and more efficient services.

The lawmakers insist that deregulation will reduce EEDC monopoly control of power distribution, which will in turn benefit consumers – lowering prices while expanding services and giving the public a say in who supplies the power that runs their household appliances and lamps.  The power ministry should urgently enact an electricity restructuring plan which they said will help curb the many excesses of the company against her customers and improve the state of power distribution in the state.

This prayer was contained in the report presented by a special ad hoc committee set up by the Speaker of the House, Hon. Edward Ubosi, on consumer protection and EEDC.

Hon Uche Ugwu, Deputy Speaker and chairman of the ad hoc committee, while presenting the report on Tuesday said the committee was set up to investigate the petitions, letters from individuals and labour organizations concerning the activities of EEDC especially as it concerns decommissioning of old meters.

He further stated that from their observations, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) did not authorize the decommissioning of meters by DISCOs or payment of outstanding bills as a precondition for acquiring meter under the MAP scheme.

Ugwu however commended the timely intervention of NERC on removal of functional meters but urged the regulatory body to investigate the high tariff imposed on electricity consumers in the South East. Also, no consumer should be denied the opportunity to acquire new meter on account of outstanding estimated bills he said.

The Speaker, Edward Ubosi in his remark, thanked the ad hoc committee for the comprehensive report and directed the Clerk, Barr Udaya to communicate the House’s resolutions to the necessary quarters.

The House then adjourned to Tuesday 3rd March 2020 to enable members participate in the forthcoming local Government Council elections.
