The Commissioner for Health Enugu State, Dr. Ikechukwu Emmanuel Obi after investigations reveals that the two newly confirmed COVID-19 positive cases recorded in Ebonyi State do not reside in Enugu State.
“Obviously, the patients deliberately misinformed Ebonyi health authorities upon questioning. The couple said they travelled to Ebonyi State from Oji River Local Government Area in Enugu State, where the man purportedly deals on phone accessories,” says Obi.
Based on the above claims of the positive cases and as expected by the laid down procedures in containing further spread of the virus, the Enugu State Ministry of Health COVID-19 Rapid Response Team immediately swung into action.
Upon investigation so as to identify their contacts in Oji River LGA, the team, however, could neither find any proof that this couple lived in Oji River LGA of Enugu State as claimed.
On further inquiry with Ebonyi State Health, authorities revealed that the couple intentionally deceived the medical team on duty.
“For fear of being quarantined, they claimed they reside in Oji River LGA in Enugu State, in an attempt to conceal their actual take-off point, Lagos State,” Obi disclosed
The couple’s claims as posited by the Commissioner for Health Enugu State on the State’s official social media account however differ from the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi’s account during his update on the COVID-19 situation on Sunday in Abakaliki on 3rd May 2020.
“The fifth case is a 24-year-old lady, a hairdresser from Ogwu in Umuobuna ward of Ohaozara LGA of the State. She resides at Number 30, Queens Close, Okpara Avenue, Enugu.
“She returned to Ebonyi with her family members on April 27 to Ogbu in Uburu” (The Guardian).
Both State’s accounts are conflicting but one thing is certain, the spread of the virus is real and all are enjoined to adhere to all the precautionary measures outlined by the Nigerian Center for Disease Control, NCDC, and the State Government.
