Elections in Nigeria have become synonymous with violence that even a prestigious association like the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, will be riddled with such shameful actions associated with touts.

On Thursday, members of the association gathered in Michael Okpara Square, venue designated for the election to vote. Little did they know that the virus which has infested elections generally in Nigeria has crept in surreptitiously into NMA.

The West African Pilot News learned that, while some blame the fiasco on the disenfranchisement of qualified members of ARD ESUT-Teaching hospital Parklane due to issues pertaining to check-off dues and levies, others reveal the long-standing problems within the association as the root cause.

According to Dr. Nwafor Osita, the underlying problem that escalated into violence and consequent cancellation of the election thus bringing shame to the association is rooted in leadership failure, greed, and flagrant abuse of power for financial gains.

“Any right-thinking person who followed the event critically would have predicted this outcome owing to the desperation, arrogance, manipulations, deceits, and blatant leadership failure exhibited by Dr. Ike Okwesili in the build-up to the elections,” said Nwafor.

Nwafor further accused the outgoing chairman, Dr. Okwesili of tampering with the reserved 25,000 USD of the Association accruing from journal sale against AGM decision.

On the association’s financial report, Nwafor maintained that the audit committee report was adjudged incomplete because of disparities in the bank accounts of the association and the financial report.

Dr. Nwafor’s further revelation collaborates with Dr. Chima Edeoga, President of ARD Parklane that Ike Okwesili and the electoral committee chairman left the election venue to Toscana hotel which is the closest hotel to the square to count ballot papers and announce the result.

More updates from WAP Enugu as we await next line of action from the Returning Officer, Dr Agunwa.

Recall that the Returning officer had issued a circular signed on Thursday 6th August, 2020 cancelling the election.

“Further details as regards way forward will be made available in the next 72 hours,” he said.
