The Governing Council of the University of Lagos has confirmed the sack of Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe as the Vice-Chancellor.
The Registrar and Secretary of the Council, Mr. Oladejo Azeez, confirmed the removal of Prof Ogundipe in a statement on Wednesday.
Ogundipe was removed for gross misconduct, financial recklessness and other offences, the Nation reported.
“The general public is hereby notified that at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday 2 August 2020 and in accordance with the statutory power vested in it by law, the Governing Council of Lagos removed Prof. Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS from office as Vice-Chancellor of the University with immediate effect.
“The decision was based on the Council’s investigation of serious acts of wrongdoing, gross misconduct, financial recklessness, and abuse of office against Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe,” the statement read.
But Prof. Ogundipe has said he remains the VC of the university and that his purported removal was a figment of imagination, according to the Nation.
Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Education has said that it was not aware of the removal of the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG.
Ben Goong, the spokesperson of the Ministry affirmed that the Governing Council is empowered to dismiss the VC.
“While the Ministry awaits for the proper briefing from the university authorities, it is important to reaffirm that council has the power to hire and fire but that due process must be followed in doing so,” Goong stated.
