Igbo Youth Assembly (IYA) worldwide, a socio-cultural youth organisation, has called on various pro-Biafra groups to stop secession agitation and channel their energies towards promoting national cohesion.
IYA gave the advice in a statement jointly signed by its President-General, Mr Ifeanyi Nwaudunna and Secretary-General, Mr Casmir Irekamba, in Owerri on Thursday.
Nwaudunna said that Nigeria was better when it remainEd one indivisible entity, adding that disintegration may make the country lose its economic diversity, political, military and numerical strength.
He noted that dividing the country would be of enormous cost to Nigerians of Igbo extraction, whose businesses and means of livelihood were domiciled outside the SouthEast region.
“There is no part of Nigeria, no matter how remote, where you will not see the Igbo man plying his trade, sometimes with acquired landed property.
“For what gain then will a well-meaning Igbo man or woman call for disintegration of Nigeria with its attendant economic and political consequences,’’ he asked.
Nwaudunna described agitations for secession as “unfortunate and misguided’’, adding that it had misrepresented the peace-loving and hardworking Igbos, doing their legitimate businesses all over the country.
He advised the pro-Biafra groups to jettison agitations for secession and concentrate on forming alliances and be involved in national engagements as part of strategies for the 2023 general elections.
“No patriotic Igbo leader will clamour for Nigeria’s disintegration rather than seek a united, prosperous Nigeria.
“Igbo Youth Assembly worldwide urges the various Igbo groups to do away with the quest for secession and indulge in activities and programmes that sustain national peace and unity. United we stand, divided we fall,’’ he said.
