In response to growing spates of violence against innocent citizens, a public hearing to ascertain public inputs towards legislating on the Prohibition of Violence Against Persons Act has commenced in Yola, the Adamawa state capital.
The Adamawa State House of Standing Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with the International Republican Institute on Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, VAPP organized the event held at the American University Hotel Yola.
During the event, the Chairperson of the Committee and member representing Demsa Constituency at the Adamawa state House of Assembly, Mrs. Kate Raymond Mamuno reassured the determination of the committee towards legislating on Act.
“The purpose of the Public Hearing is to get inputs from various stakeholders and urged them to contribute positively towards ensuring the actualization of the Act.
“The Act if considered and adopted will fight against discrimination against persons and will provide protection and stiffer punishment to offenders”. Mamun explained.
She advised participants to contribute positively so the Act that would address all forms of violence against persons in Adamawa State.
In his address, the Chief of Staff Adamawa State Government House Yola, Professor Maxwell Gidado commended the organizers for their foresight towards ensuring a violence-free society and urged them to maintain a good gesture.
Gidado who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) described the program as timely, he promised to make contributions towards the passage of the bill whenever it is ready.
The State Coordinator of the International Republican Institute Mrs. Charity Anaja explained that the Public Hearing was organized to look into the Prohibition of Violence Against Persons Act and ensure it captured all areas needed for effectiveness.
