Parents in Makama Ward A in Yola South Local Government of Adamawa state have been enjoined to join hands with relevant authorities towards eliminating violence against women and girls in the area.
A consultant with the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF, Bashir Abubakar made the plea while launching a community volunteer group organized by a Non-governmental organization, Spotlight Initiative, in collaboration with the European Union held at Nana Asma’u Health Centre Yola.
“The programme is aimed at enlightening Ward leaders on the need to form Committees that will sensitize the populace on ways to protect the girl-child against Gender-Based Violence”. He said
Malam Bashir expressed displeasure over the lukewarm attitude of some parents who neglect their responsibilities.
In his speech, the Community Orientation and Mobilization Officer in charge of Yola South Local Government Alhaji Mu’awiya Abba said the involvement of the organization is to train members of the Community on how volunteers would work to check child abuse in their areas.
He advised parents to monitor the movement of their children and prevent them from associating with bad peer groups.
