ColumnsNigeriaOpinionPower indeed does corrupt —The shame of Desmond Elliot’s hate speech

Not too long ago at Lagos State University, people like me were giving you transport money to catch a ride back home. You’ve forgotten where you come from… omashey oo.

I’ve received a lot of calls and text messages regarding Desmond Elliot’s posts, which  I made and rightfully so. It would have been morally wrong and reprehensible not to call him out because of the “Na we-we” or “he is one of us” mentality. The change we seek must begin with us.

You could see that Desmond owes all of his entertainment colleagues an apology for personally calling the youth out as instigators of his purported looting and violence, simply because they raised their voices to condemn police brutality and injustices happening in our society.

Below is my initial post.

To make it worse, Desmond practically advocated for the censorship and control of social media which is the only means for Nigerian youths to err their grievances regarding a nation that has failed them. He called for government regulations that would subjugate  peoples’ will in expressing themselves in a democracy. Isn’t that absurd? That is dangerous and he should be held accountable for his gross mischaracterization of the Nigerian youths and Nigerians as a whole.

So, when has building a latrine, out-of-date wooden bridge, and pathetic makeshift hand washing stands become an achievement?

Lastly, just like Desmond, I condemned the looting of innocent peoples’ livelihood. It is not who we are and that doesn’t represent the peaceful protest the world watched. This protest was peaceful and most fruitful until Desmond’s godfathers sent their thugs and arsonists to disrupt the harmony and progress.

May I also ask dishonorable Desmond @desmondelliot, “since representing Surulere, what have you done for your constituents?” Build a latrine? A wood bridge and laughable makeshift hand washing stands??? This is a disgrace. How much was commissioned for those projects???

So, when has building a latrine, out-of-date wooden bridge, and pathetic makeshift hand washing stands become an achievement?

For those who live in Surulere, please outline what Desmond has done that is visible and has impacted your lives positively?

For those who live in Surulere, please outline what Desmond has done that is visible and has impacted your lives positively??

And please understand that it is within your rights to start asking him and others that represents you to show you what they’ve done for you. It is time for accountability. This is how change will begin ―demand of accountability and positive proof of representations.

So Desmond, we would be waiting on you to outline what  you have done to impact the lives of the constituents you are crying for on national television??  Please outline them all.
