The Special Adviser to the Enugu State Governor on Water Resources, Dubem Onyia Jnr has called on families resident in Enugu State to maximize the Clean Family Campaign and adopt the recommended hygiene behaviors.
Onyia Jnr made that promise at the Clean Family Campaign Launch organized by the Ministry of Water Resources, Enugu, WaterAid Nigeria and other stakeholders; the Campaign aims to motivate people and healthcare facilities towards practicing key hygiene behaviors.
“The family is the basic social unit of the society and if they decide to take responsibility for their personal hygiene, we will have a healthy society,” Onyia said.
Key hygiene behaviors such as hand washing with soap, respiratory hygiene, social distancing, cleaning frequently used surfaces, use of clean toilets and proper waste management.
In his statement, Dubem Onyia Jnr. Special Adviser to the Enugu State Governor on Water Resources said, “The Clean Family Campaign will contribute to achieving the objectives of the state’s Open Defecation Free roadmap, set us on track to attain ODF status by 2022 and change the narrative around sanitation and hygiene in Enugu State.”
“The State Government is committed to implementing this campaign in the state not just as a positive tool towards achieving ODF status but its timeliness in light of the COVID-19 pandemic; the campaign also aligns with the national sanitation campaign ‘Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet’ launched in 2019 with the aim to end open defecation in Nigeria by 2025,” Onyia reiterated.
On behalf of the state government, Onyia promised, “we will empower and encourage people to practice good hygiene using context-specific hygiene messages through promotional touchpoints such as TV, posters, stickers and radio,”
“We will also provide hygiene facilities and kits to support the practice of the recommended hygiene behaviours.”
“The State Government will also hand over 35 permanent hand washing facilities and 150 semi-permanent hand washing facilities and 6500 hygiene packs to some under-served communities in the state,” Onyia disclosed.
Speaking on WaterAid Nigeria’s commitment to working with the Enugu State Government to achieve its water, sanitation and hygiene targets, Terkimbi Tom, the State Programme Lead, Enugu state said:
“Delivering on the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals 6- Clean water and sanitation for all is not a task any one government or organization can achieve alone. It requires a stakeholders approach, synergistic partnership and collaborative financing.
“WaterAid is committed to working with the government, sector stakeholders and development partners towards making good hygiene a priority for all in Nigeria.
“Everyone has a right to wash, sanitation and hygiene and we must act to leave no one behind.”
