The track record of Nigeria’s famous female hunter Aisha Bakari Gombi in complementing the Nigerian army and other security agencies in counter-insurgency operations, armed banditry, kidnapping in addition to fostering peace and development in the society necessitated an NGO, Royalty Women For Peace and Development Initiative –ROWPEDI to confer the award of excellence on the huntress.
Aisha Gombi who doubles as women leader of the Hunters Association of Nigeria and Sarauniyar Bindiga Adamawa has been helping in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency and other crimes plaguing northeast Nigeria.
Presenting the award to the female hunter, the president of the NGO, Haj. Maisaratu Bello commended her sacrifice to her fatherland in fighting crimes and urged her to continue with the good work.
‘’Our sister, we are very proud of you, you are a great and brave woman, a good example of how a woman is supposed to be.
‘’Today we gathered here to celebrate you as one of our heroes so that the whole world should know what you are doing.’’
The group, however, regrets that despite the accolades and encomium been poured on her Aisha Bakari Gombi in some states and outside Nigeria her own state which she has helped in many ways seems to have forgotten her sacrifice in countering – Boko Haram reign in at least seven local government areas of Adamawa.
‘’ This brave woman has helped a lot during Boko Haram attacks in some of our communities, and she is being celebrated in other states and outside Nigeria, while in her home state- the story seems to be different.
‘’ That’s why today we are celebrating with you as a great and brave woman so that the world will know,’’ said Maisaratu Bello as she prevailed on the need for the state and Federal government to commend such heroes who sacrificed for their states and fatherland.
Responding, Aisha Bakari Gombi expressed appreciation to the NGO, for finding her worthy and reiterated her commitment to continuing to do more.
She also expressed determination to collaborate with the government at all levels in the fight against insurgency and other crimes in society.
‘’Though it’s risk and tasking, however, we are ever ready to assist our country, for peace to reign and we are not asking for money from the government.
‘’ All we need is logistic support and operational vehicles to enhance our operations, like other volunteers.
‘’ We don’t have sophisticated guns, we are only using our locally made Dane-guns; we don’t have vehicles – we resort to chattering commercial vehicles.
Some hunters spoke to described Aisha Bakari Gombi’s experience and determination in fighting crimes as a ‘’ gift from God-Allah.’’
‘’Fighting crime with the borne of terrorism in Nigeria, and northeast in particular, the hunters we gang-up to assist our communities, so among the ladies in fact Aisha Bakari is among the best fighters in hunters we have in Nigeria,’’ Salihu Buba Wobkenso, head of administration, Hunters Association has said.
Ibrahim Babakanya, another commander of hunters said, ‘’ She is an extra-ordinary fighter that we are blessed with, in fact, she is a mother to us.
‘’Sarauniya is only bearing a woman name, she is a ‘man’ in spirit and action. It’s marvelous the way and manner she doggedly fights, in her no retreat no surrender and that’s why we christened her ‘ Dodon Boko Haram Ko Munafuki Da Mugu!’’
The huntress has received several awards within and outside the state due to her selfless service in fighting crime which recently Governor of Borno state Prof.Babagana Umara Zulum appointed her as Special Assistant.
