AWKA — The Panel of Inquiry set up by the Anambra Government on the land dispute between Aguleri and Umeri communities, Anambra  East Local Government Area, has called for memoranda from interested persons.

The Secretary of the panel, Mrs. Ndidi Onuigbo, made this known in a statement in Awka on Friday.

Onuigbo is also the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

She requested interested persons to submit memoranda that would address the panel’s terms of reference through the traditional rulers of Aguleri and Umueri communities.

She said the memoranda should be submitted to Igwe Benneth Emeka, the traditional ruler of Umueri; and Igwe Michael Idigo, the traditional ruler of Aguleri, not later than Jan. 27.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Dr. Nkem Okeke, the Anambra Deputy Governor,  inaugurated the panel on Aguleri and Umueri boundary dispute on Jan. 19.

Okeke prayed the committee, to make headway in solving the problem which has lingered for over 22 years, within the shortest possible time.

The 15-member panel is to look into the remote and immediate causes of the land dispute with a view to resolving it and entrenching permanent peace between the communities.

The panel has Air Vice Marshal Ben Chiobi (Rtd.) as Chairman and other members include the Attorney General of the state, Mrs. Uju Nworgu; and the Commissioner for Lands, Mr. Bonaventure Enemali.

Other members of the committee are Igwe Benneth Emeka, Igwe Michael Idigo, Mr. Ifeanyi Ajaoku, Mr. Chinedu Anigbaoso, and Mr. Chike Maduekwu, amongst others.

The panel was given three weeks to complete its assignment which included, establishing the immediate cause of the dispute that erupted between the two communities on Jan. 16.

The panel is expected to interview the communities and families that claim to own the parcel of land in dispute to get to the root of the problem and proffer a lasting solution.
