The Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on Tuesday inspected the site for the construction of roundabout and tower at the popular Opi Junction, about 12km from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Campus.
The main thrust of the inspection tour was to obtain approval from the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) for commencement of the project.
In his speech, the Governor explained, “The roundabout and tower will be a deserving identity of Nsukka which is the second-largest city in Enugu State, but was hitherto neglected; Nsukka truly deserves major facelifts in terms of infrastructural development”.
He also revealed that NAMA was included in the tour because of the height of the tower; their approval is pertinent to ensure that the tower will in no way endanger or obstruct to flights.
Ugwuanyi then expressed profound gratitude to members of the State House of Assembly for approving the project and other special interventions for the Nsukka zone, in the 2021 budget.
Recall that the Enugu State House of Assembly approved a sum of one billion naira for the construction of Opi roundabout and Nsukka Tower in the 2021 state budget; Enugu State 2021 Budget is tagged Budget of Recovery and Continued Growth.
The Governor also thanked the stakeholders involved in the project; the landowners where the roundabout and tower will be sited, the Federal Controller of Works, Ministry of Works and Housing, Odinma Nsukka community, the youths, amongst others, for granting approval for the commencement of the project.
In his response, Engr Oyekanmi Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for seeking assessment and approval from the Ministry and NAMA before the commencement of the project.
While the NAMA Airspace Manager Yohana, applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi’s approach to their agency for approval; “NAMA will look at the technical drawings and give the necessary advice,” he said.
People who witnessed the tour described the project as timely and a necessity saying that it will decongest traffic at the ever-busy Opi junction and place the area in the world map of history with a unique and deserving identity.
Dignitaries involved in the tour include Engr Greg Nnaji Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure; Engr. Femi Oyekanmi Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing; the Airspace Manager, Iliya Yohana Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA); Barr. Cosmas Ugwueze Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area; Chinedu Nwamba and Emma Ugwuerua, members representing Nsukka East and West constituencies respectively in the State House of Assembly;
Others include Engr. Dr. Mrs. Obiageli Abba Special Adviser to the Governor on Project Development and Implementation; Prince Emeka Odo Chairman, Enugu State Internal Revenue Service; Arc Chris Offor, Dr. Dan Shere, Ogbo Asogwa, HRH Igwe Pius Agbo Traditional Ruler of Agu Opi autonomous community, a delegation from Odinma Nsukka, amongst others.
