Nigeria Indigenous Languages Development Council (NILDC) says it has developed a National Strategy for the preservation and development of the over four hundred languages spoken by various communities in Nigeria.

Mr. Jeshua Timothy  Napa Chairman of the council, Adamawa State chapter stated this when he paid a courtesy call on the General  Manager of Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation  ABC Yola at the Broadcasting  House in Yola.

“The main objectives of the council is to identify and effectively classify all indigenous languages in Adamawa as well as encourage the use of such languages within the Family, communities and also in official matters where possible.

“To achieve these objectives, the council intends to collaborate with families, educational organizations and institutions, religious groups as well as the mass media.

“The strategy focuses on what communities, government, and non-governmental organizations can do collectively to preserve and develop indigenous Languages in Nigeria”, Napa said.

He appealed to the management of the media outfit to assist in that regard to save indigenous languages from further extinction.

Responding, the General Manager of ABC Yola, Mr. Alleni Ethan Dah expressed sadness that many languages are facing threats of extinction.

“As part of the effort is to promote the use of indigenous languages in Adamawa, ABC Yola is running programmes in fifteen (15) different local languages to reach out to members of the public”, he said.

Alleni stated that the task ahead of the council is timely and important and declared the readiness of ABC Yola to assist in that regard.
