KADUNA — The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) says trans loading of petroleum products was responsible for the fire outbreak at Anguwan Mu’azu in Kaduna on Tuesday.

Abubakar Hassan, Executive Secretary of the agency made this known while conducting a check on environmental safety issues in the area on Thursday.

According to him, the fire incident is a result of trans-loading of petroleum products by inexperienced persons with no safety measures in place.

He said three firemen sustained injuries while putting out the fire and were currently in the hospital receiving treatment.

Hassan said the agency would not allow people to do anything to jeopardise the effort of the government in securing the lives and property of people in the state.

“People do not understand the different risks they take on a day-to-day basis, that is the reason why we have to ensure they have an attitudinal change to make them aware of the dangers around them,” he said.

The executive secretary noted that illegal dealings in petroleum products were going on at the site before the fire incident.

“As you can see, people are beginning to move out of the area; meaning they know what they are doing is against the law.”

He lamented that a school had borders with the illegal refinery that was refining combustible items.

Hassan disclosed that a check by SEMA officials at the school revealed that it has no safety measures.

” The school was close to the illegal refinery and did not report the activities to any relevant agency for action,  thereby, putting the lives of children at risk,” he said.

Hassan said all relevant agencies needed to synergize to intensify and strengthen the relationship of all state and non-state actors, to conduct a joint assessment of ensuring people change their attitude toward safety.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the fire incident occurred on Tuesday,  where no fewer than 11 petrol tankers were razed.

The fire incident led to the discovery of different illegal activities involving petroleum products in the area.
